Why We Use Technology
As Central Pennsylvania’s premier early learning center, we understand that technology can have a positive impact on children’s learning and development. It promotes collaboration, enhances social interaction, encourages problem solving and critical thinking skills, and more. All of these skills are critical for school readiness, but also for navigating a world of digital experiences.
At U-GRO, all technology usage and digital experiences are facilitated through our educators in a structured learning environment. They provide guidance and instruction for technology usage, ensuring that all experiences are in accordance with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). We also partner with EdTech leader Dr. Monica Burns, who’s knowledge and expertise supports our mission to establish meaningful and sustainable integration of technology at U-GRO.
How We Use Technology
On average, U-GRO preschoolers and school age students may spend up to 25 minutes per day during the week using digital tools.
- Children may be on iPads for two to three times per week for 10 minutes at a time.
- In small or large group instruction, children have no more than 20 minutes of additional screen time.
These time constraints allow for maximum effectiveness of educational technology while also managing screen time.
Children in our preschool and school age classrooms use iPads and Smart Boards through a combination of independent practice, pair work, and group facilitation.
- iPads: Most frequently used during morning free choice time or at learning stations in personalized or paired practice.
- Smart Boards: Contain select educational programs along with in-house curriculum content. Students learn math, practice their letters, read, and more. Our instructors also use our iPads and Smart Boards for together time activities.
We take a balanced, strategic approach with our technology in the classroom. It’s a learning tool that can enhance curriculum and learning experiences in a way that other mediums may not be able to.
