We’re settling into the thick of winter and that means cold temperatures, strong winds, and snow covered lawns limit the amount of time children can play outside. Your family is probably doing less running, swinging, or playing and you may all be feeling the effects of being cooped up inside.
When it’s become apparent that your family has watched enough movies, played enough board games, baked enough cookies, and colored enough pages to last a lifetime, it may be time to look for adventure outside your house. The good news is that there are plenty of indoor activities in Central PA – just a short drive from home – where you can entertain your entire family on a cold winter day.
Here are a few of our favorite indoor activities in Central PA where you can exercise your child’s body or mind:
Hands On House Children’s Museum
Hands On House is the perfect “first museum” with interactive exhibits that are geared for children 2-10 years old. Self-directed exhibits explore themes including farming, your corner grocery store, a local post office, and a busy machine shop. Face painting and a dress up station are also featured activities.
Turkey Hill Experience
Where does milk come from? More important, how is ice cream made?! Find out on a family outing to Turkey Hill Experience. Through interactive exhibits, your family can learn about the story of Turkey Hill Dairy and how ice cream and iced tea flavors are created. Ride in a vintage milk truck, milk a mechanical cow, star in a commercial, and create your very own ice cream flavor in the Taste Lab. Also, there are plenty of free samples to be had!
Hershey’s Chocolate World
Hershey’s Chocolate World is a must visit for chocolate lovers. The original Chocolate Tour is free for all visitors and takes you on a journey of sight, feel, sound, and smell from cocoa bean to chocolate bar, with a free sample at the end. You can also purchase tickets for the 4D Chocolate Mystery, Create Your Own Candy Bar, or Chocolate Tasting experiences.
Whitaker Center Science & Arts
The Whitaker Science Center features three floors of hands-on exhibits for curious minds, including KidsPlace which is designed especially for children up to five years old. Other exhibits focused on areas of interest including transportation, healthy living and the human body, movie technology, and forces of nature. While you’re there you can also catch a movie or stage performance at the adjoining cinema and theater.
SkyZone is an indoor trampoline park where families can bounce, flip, and jump out all of their winter blues! Suitable for all ages, jumpers are separated by age and size. In addition to several trampoline courts, they also offer a foam zone filled with 10,000 foam cubes. Central PA locations include Lancaster and Harrisburg.
