Navigating the First Week of School

The first few days back at school can be tough. Going from trips to the beach, playing outside and staying up late to books, early bedtimes and homework is a big change. Here are a few tips that can help you and your child navigate that first week:

    • Prepare as much as possible the night before: You’ll have enough to do in the morning before school without also scrambling to pack your child’s lunchbox as well. Instead, do as many tasks as you can the night before. Not only are you less likely to forget something due to haste, you’ll also be less stressed out and frantic.
    • Get to know your school’s professionals: You should send a brief note of introduction to your child’s teacher, and meet as many other school professionals as possible, such as nurses, principals and security guards. Since they’ll be responsible for your child’s well-being for a large chunk of the day, keep those lines of communication open!
    • Make dinner easy: Making and freezing a week’s worth of dinner ahead of time will give you more time to deal with everything that comes with those first few days of school. You can also make a meal plan for the whole family, which means one less decision each day in a week that will be full of them.
    • Schedule: Set your own and your childrens’ alarm clocks and put a big calendar where everybody can see it. This way, the whole family is on the same page, and everybody knows exactly where they need to be.
