How to Use Music in the Preschool Classroom

As many people know, music has strong effects on mood and learning, making it a great classroom tool if used correctly. From helping children learn new languages to creating a good working mood in the classroom, there are many ways that preschool teachers can use music to their advantage. Here are just a few of the ways that music can be incorporated into the classroom:

  • Signal transitions. If your class sometimes has trouble making the transition from one activity to another, playing music during these periods can be a good way to help them. Choose a certain song to represent each daily activity, then play it each day when it’s time for your students to turn their attention to that activity. Soon, just playing the song will trigger the knowledge that it’s time for that particular activity in your students’ minds.
  • Learn language. Learning song lyrics can help preschoolers become more proficient in both foreign languages and their own. Song lyrics stick in the mind in a way that many other ways of presenting information don’t. Find thematic songs to help children improve their vocabulary in a certain area, or research simple children’s songs in the foreign language your class is studying to help them become confident using the words they hear in the lyrics.
  • Manage the classroom’s energy. If it’s naptime and your whole class is rowdy and ready to start causing trouble as soon as the lights go off, putting on a soothing lullaby can help them calm down and go to sleep. Likewise, energetic songs like the Macarena and the Hokey Pokey will get your class pumped for physical activity.
