Rolling the Dice: The Benefits of Playing Board Games

In today’s technologically driven world, computer games and digitized forms of entertainment are becoming all too prevalent. It has become increasingly common to see young children, even preschoolers, using their parents’ smartphones or tablets to amuse themselves. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this behavior, it’s important for Mom and Dad to think about other types of games that are as mentally stimulating as they are fun.

Board games present an interesting opportunity for young children, as they promote a number of habits and thinking skills that are vital later in life. Even simple ones such as “Sorry!” and “Chutes and Ladders” help participants to explore information and knowledge in very under appreciated ways.

Let’s look at “Chutes and Ladders,” for example. In this board game, the players spin a wheel that tells them how many spaces to move. While some squares do not have an effect, others cause the player to either move back a space or push forward to a new one. The big benefit here involves math skills, as preschoolers are counting the number of spaces equal to whichever amount they spun for. Additionally, “Chutes and Ladders” teaches social cooperation thanks to the turn-taking system.

Because children love to be challenged and engaged, parents shouldn’t be afraid to introduce them to more complex games. Playing cards are a great resource to turn to, as there are countless varieties to choose from, such as Go Fish and Old Maid. Communication skills are thoroughly explored during an activity like this.

Here at U-GRO Learning Centres, we understand that effective learning strategies take many forms, such as board games. Our preschool programs are optimized to promote necessary skill and behavior development in an innovative curriculum. Schedule a visit today to learn more!
